LIVING TRAM STOP - Green Design in the Urban Context
explores how a tram stop can become more than just a
waiting area. By improving the waiting conditions at the
Sofienberg tram stop in Oslo, the project enhances the
everyday public transport experience for visitors and
people passing by. The proposal addresses challenges
such as limited vegetation, hard surfaces, narrow
platforms, and a lack of comfortable places to wait.
The design is based on an understanding of how
people move, wait, and interact, and on existing characteristic
elements of Sofienberg. The concept consists
of five main points: introducing new vegetation and
integrating existing trees, rainwater management,
lighting installation, working with the surface, and
seating elements oriented toward the sun. Existing
materials such as platform stones, bricks, and metal
bollards are reused to strengthen place identity and
continuity with the surroundings.
By combining functional improvements with climate-oriented
design, the tram stop is reimagined as a more
welcoming, safe, and inclusive urban space. The
approach is not limited to Sofienberg but can serve as
a flexible framework for other tram stops, adapting to
local identity while keeping essential public transport
functions.
