DYNAMIC MANDØ explores a future in which the agent of
change on the island, the dikes, is altered to create new
ways of living with water. In response to climate
change and rising sea levels, the project proposes
openings in the dikes to reintroduce the dynamics of
the Wadden Sea. Tidal water, sediment transport and
saltmarsh processes become active forces shaping
the landscape.
The transformation unfolds in two phases, marked by
openings in the outer and inner dikes. With each phase,
new landscapes, species and habitats emerge, reshaping
how the island is experienced.
Tourism is regulated to support sustainable relationships
between residents, visitors, wildlife, and landscape.
Over time, parts of Mandø may become uninhabitable
for humans, while opening space for new natural
processes. Adapting to climate change here means
allowing landscapes to transform.
